Calling All Students!!

Hey Yorkies!...Mr. Byrd and I and the rest of the Tech Committee need your input as we tackle the job of updating the tech plan for the next 3 years. When you have the time, take a moment to post your responses to these questions or send them to ctorg@york.org. Please be realistic--for ex. we won't be going completely wireless or becoming a laptop campus by 2010. Specific examples or anecdotes are much appreciated.

1. How well does the current campus technology fulfill your academic needs?
2. How well-prepared are you to handle course assignments that require the use of technology?
3. What kinds of additional tech would you appreciate having access to on campus to help you complete classwork?
4. How could your teachers better use technology to help you master the course material?
5. Is there anything you expect you'll need to be able to do in college with technology that you're not practicing now?
6. What should a new tech plan really, truly not forget to include? (again, be realistic...)

Thanks for taking the time to add feedback. Parents, if you'd like to toss in your thoughts here, we'd appreciate your input on these kinds of issues as well.

Windows Vista would be nice, when it comes out...

yes but to run Vista effectivly you would have replace all those computers, even the new dells, or install DX10 video cards to be able to support the new Direct X Windows interface without trouble. However, there is really no need for Vista for a while, say 1-2 years so I wouldn't worry about it.

We do not need to worry about Vista, XPP will be fine for the next couple of years(think about it people today are still runing 98 and ME and doing just fine). Upgrading the school server's would be nice, also allowing students to acess their H: drive's outside of the school network (ie home) and being able to edit the web pages that have been given to us(9th graders). It would be really sweet (but probly not going to happen soon) to have 1-2 computers that could run virtual windows/linux/OS X in the lab. Also dual screens would be great to help increase productivity:) . Upgrading the computers in the library is great, but what about the rest on the lower floor??

I'm really glad people are commenting and contributing to this discussion, but do add your name, even if it's just like I do here. Anonymous is vague and vaguely irritating.

The only reason I know how to spell anonymous is that i know so many people with that name. if you do anonymous entries, that's fine, but try and tag the comment with a recognizable name.
Vista as you know has been delayed. XPP will likely be around York until its functionality becomes inhibiting. MS will likely try and make vista "necessary", but that is not really likely to impact our uses. The access to the student file and web servers should happen in the 06 part of the 06-07 school year. It is a high priority need. Dual monitors are really neat and do enhance productivity and could be educationally useful. That said, they are not likely to show up around here any time soon as they remain a low priority need.

I've deleted the most recent post because the person remained completely anonymous. I really do want input, but at least tag your name at the end (as gbyrd did above). He and I both prefer if you use the "other" option when you post...it's not that hard and it at least gives us the sense of who's saying what, particularly if we want to follow up on an idea. The idea is to have a dialogue...between people, not anonys.
Thanks.
